Lady Liberty

Editorial illustration for an article about the increasing binge drinking problem, in America.

The torch is a symbol of enlightenment, lighting the way to freedom, and showing the path to liberty. Through the subversion of the torch's symbolism, and replacing it with a large glass if red wine, the idea becomes more about gratification, and sustaining a constant high.

While the article talks a lot about binge drinking, I did not want my illustration to show a drunken Lady Liberty, as I felt this rendered the meaning redundant. The pose, the raising of the glass, and the expression, were all key to this illustration being understood as a change in how society views alcohol, rather than a more humorous adaptation of an iconic landmark.
